En 1916 s'ouvre dans un tribunal rural du centre du Mexique un procès entre deux femmes pour la propriété d'une maison d'une valeur plus que modeste. Il n'y a rien là que de très banal. Mais très vite, les évènements se succèdent et le conflit prend une dimension inattendue : deux juges s'affrontent, le gouverneur de l'Etat tente un arbitrage et le caudillo de la région fait intervenir l'armée. Pour l'historien, c'est l'occasion d'entrer dans une société rurale où les relations de pouvoirs sont bouleversées par la Révolution et les opportunités qu'elle offre.
Surtout, cette situation inédite ouvre une voie d'accès sur le fonctionnement de l'administration judiciaire pendant ces temps troublés. L'image d'une justice modernisée, autonome et professionnelle en sort plus qu'écornée.
